One of the easiest ways to get your exercise in is... WALKING! Getting your steps in throughout the day is incidental exercise. Basically, this means that it's not intentional, and it's required to complete daily activities. Here are some ways you can increase your step count throughout the day.
1. Wear a device that tracks your steps
A device such as an Apple Watch or Fitbit will track your steps throughout the day. This is a great way for you to monitor your activity and set targets for you to meet each day. The amount of steps you achieve will be highly dependent on your routine. Track it for a week and if it sits under a 10,000 daily average, aim to increase that amount gradually.
2. Pick the furthest car park!
I know it sounds like a pain and normally we all circle around the car park trying to find the closest spot - BUT! Let's shake things up and start parking a few extra spots away! Whether you're at work or the local shopping center, avoid the chaos and get some extra steps in! Not only that but it can also give you a bit more free time to focus on self-development, by listening to a podcast or audiobook.
3. Create a walking challenge with family or friends
What better way to create some friendly competition than through a walking challenge. See who can do the most steps in a week and have a prize for the winner each week. It can be as small or as big as you like, but creating some competition around these things will give you more reason to get those steps in.
4. Take regular walk breaks
Whether you work in a corporate setting, retail, construction, or whatever it might be. Use your breaks to get some fresh air and get your body moving. Particularly if you are in an office job or sitting most of the day, make it a priority to get up, correct your posture, and get the blood circulating again.
5. Catch up with a friend over a walk
We never turn down a coffee catch-up, but why not be that health-conscious friend that organises a coffee AND a walk! Find a local park or beach close by to your local coffee shop, grab a takeaway coffee, and clock some steps while you catch up and socialise! You will get the best of both worlds all while exercising without any intentional effort.
Just take one step!
You don't need to implement everything all at once!
Pick one of the tips above that you feel will be most beneficial to you, get your steps in, and start.
