The supermarket can be an overwhelming experience. Lots of ailes, confusing food labels, Low Fat, Low sugar.... we hear you...
Here are some ways you can best manage the supermarket trip so you leave with a trolley full of wholesome and nutritious food.
1. Shop around the perimeters
The majority of supermarkets have their most nutrient-dense foods around the perimeter. Meats, fruit, vegetables, dairy...this is where you want to direct most of your shopping experience, and then move to the middle ailes for specific ingredients and items that are needed.
2. Don't go to the supermarket hungry
With all the temptations that are on offer at a supermarket, make a conscious effort to be satiated and hydrated before grocery shopping. This will put the odds in your favour and reduce the chance of you making poor food choices because you're hungry.
3. Have a list
Just like we have a work-to-do list, a supermarket list will give you the structure you need to be efficient when grabbing items. Trying to remember your list is likely to result in you forgetting things, and you most likely will come out of the store with something low quality that wasn't needed.
4. Read the first 3-5 ingredients on the label
Do you know what these ingredients are? Does it look like gibberish with random letters and numbers? If you don't know what the first 3-5 ingredients are, then chances are that the food is not nutrient-dense or healthy.
